These are a few of my favourite things

Favourite TV Show of All Time

Well as you can see from the links on the left i'm a huge fan of DALLAS. The great 1980's night time soap. To call it a soap would be an insult to the show tho as it featured some of the best acting in '80s television. For those who may not be aware of what the show was about then a quick synopsis is order:

The series is about the lives of the Ewing family headed by patriach Jock (Jim Davis) and Miss Ellie, (Barbara Bel Geddes) their two sons Bobby (Patrick Duffy) and J.R. (Larry Hagman) The wives of the two brothers had very important roles in the series. J.R. had the long suffering Sue Ellen (Linda Gray) at his side. Even tho J.R. may have treated her badly they were still a very good couple. Bobby's wife was the lynchpin of the series however, as the young and fresh faced Pamela Barnes (Victoria Principal) was caught in the middle of the intense Barnes/Ewing feud. You see her brother Cliff (Ken Kercheval) absolutely HATED the Ewings due to the way Jock treated their father Digger during their wildcatting days.

Other integral members of the cast were Lucy Ewing, (Charlene Tilton) the spoiled daughter of the third Ewing son Gary. You also have Ray Krebbs, the Southfork foreman who later found out he was in actuality a Ewing himself. There's a funny thing about that tho, as DALLAS originated as a mini-series and in that mini-series Ray and Lucy had some, shall we say, carnal relations.

The cast that I just mentioned were the main cast for most of the series' run on the air. The show was huge in that there were literally hundreds of different characters throughout the years. Some of the characters that drifted in and out actually became main cast members for some time.

The series is most remembered today for the "Who Shot J.R." cliffhanger in 1980. Sadly I wasn't aware of the magnitude of this event but to many who were around at that time, it was "the longest summer". You see J.R. was a character that everybody loved to hate and it was that storyline and cliffhanger that pushed DALLAS into the iconic show that it became.

DALLAS was miles better then the other night time soaps of the era. It had, for the most part good and believable storylines, a strong cast that can play their roles straight or with a touch of humour and most of all, a timelessness that many can identify with.

Well that synopsis turned a bit long. I will post another "few of my favourite things" topic sometime this week. (maybe next Sunday)
